The basics

What is OCR?

Obstacle course racing pairs trail running with obstacles: walls, rope climbs, monkey bars, heavy carries, hoists, and crawls. Spartan Race, DEKA, and Tough Mudder are the events most people know. It rewards a rare combination, a strong running engine and full-body strength, plus the technique to clear each obstacle instead of burning energy on penalties.

That is exactly what APX Velocity trains here in Menlo Park. We build the run base, the strength, and the specific skills together, so the course feels like a session you have already done.

Why APX

Why train OCR at APX Velocity.

Coaches who race it

Your coaches line up at Spartan, DEKA, and HYROX events themselves. You learn obstacle technique, pacing, and grip strategy from people who have cleared these courses under real fatigue, not from a script.

Skills, not just sweat

We drill the actual movements: rope climbs, get-overs, loaded carries, and hoists. Obstacles become reps you have already rehearsed, instead of surprises that cost you a burpee penalty on race day.

The engine underneath

OCR is a running race with obstacles bolted on. We build the trail and interval base first, then layer on the strength that carries you between obstacles when your legs are cooked.

Scaled to every level

Your first Spartan Sprint or chasing an age-group podium, every movement scales to where you are today. No experience and no qualifying time required to start.

What is obstacle course training?

Obstacle course racing (OCR) combines trail running with obstacles like walls, rope climbs, monkey bars, carries, and crawls. Training for it means building running endurance, full-body strength, and specific skills — grip, get-over technique, efficient carries — so you clear obstacles instead of taking penalties. At APX Velocity we coach all of it in one program in Menlo Park.

Do you offer Spartan and DEKA race training?

Yes. APX Velocity is a DEKA-affiliate gym and coaches Spartan Race and OCR preparation, from Sprint to Beast distances. We train the skills you'll actually face — rope climb, spear throw, bucket carry, Hercules hoist, walls — plus the running and strength base underneath them, with coaches who race these events themselves.

Do I need experience to start obstacle course training?

No. There are no prerequisites at APX Velocity. Coaches scale every movement and carry to your current strength and skill, whether it's your first Spartan Sprint or you're chasing an age-group podium. If you can run a comfortable 5km, we'll get you course-ready.
